Instagram Username Generator

This Instagram username generator turns your name, niche and style into a list of handle ideas you can copy in one tap. Every idea fits Instagram’s character rules, so you won’t waste time on names the app will reject.

It runs in your browser, with no login and nothing to connect. We also don’t store what you type. There’s a TikTok tab too, if you want a matching handle there.

Ideas only. Check availability in the Instagram app.

How the Instagram handle generator works

You give it a few clues, and it builds names from word lists on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so results show up as you type.

    1. Add your name or a keyword, if you like.
    2. Pick a niche, such as fitness, food, travel or gaming.
    3. Choose a style: aesthetic, cute, cool, funny, professional or short.
    4. Then decide whether to allow numbers, periods or underscores.

Each result shows its length, for example “14/30”. Star the ones you like, and they’ll stay in your favourites list on this device. However, the tool has no way to see Instagram’s records. So treat every result as an idea, and check it in the app before you get attached.

    Instagram username rules

Instagram usernames can use letters, numbers, periods and underscores. That’s what Instagram’s Help Center lists, and it’s what the generator allows.

Length is less clear. The app stops you at 30 characters, and that’s the figure most guides report. That said, Instagram doesn’t publish the limit, so the tool simply caps ideas at 30.

A few other rules are widely reported but not official:

    • No period at the start or end.
    • No two periods in a row.
    • Spaces aren’t allowed, so the tool strips them out and lowercases everything.

Tips for a good Instagram username

A good handle is short, easy to say out loud and clearly linked to what you post. If people can’t spell it after hearing it once, it’s too hard.

    • Keep it short. Fewer characters are easier to remember and tag.
    • Say it aloud. If you have to explain it, try again.
    • Match your niche. A word like “bakes” or “lifts” tells people what to expect.
    • Skip confusing swaps. Swapping “o” for “0” looks clever, but people mistype it.
    • Think about search. Instagram search looks at your name and your username, so a clear keyword can help people find you.
    • Use it everywhere. The same handle on Instagram and TikTok makes you easier to find.

What to do if your username is taken

If the name you want is in use, Instagram’s own advice is to try a version of it. In other words, add periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations.

For example, “bakesbyjo” could become “bakes.by.jo”, “jobakes_” or “bakesbyjo.co”. Even so, use add-ons that still read well. A tidy period usually looks better than a random string of numbers.

How often can you change your Instagram username?

Instagram doesn’t publish a fixed waiting period. However, it may limit changes, and a change on a large account may be reviewed first. So check what the app shows you before you switch.

Also, remember that your old handle can be taken by someone else once you let it go.

    After you pick a name

Next, set up the rest of your profile. Our Instagram bio generator helps you fill the 150 characters under your name. If you’re on TikTok too, try the TikTok username generator for a matching handle.

Once you’re posting, the engagement rate calculator shows how your posts compare with 2026 benchmarks.

    FAQ

How many characters can an Instagram username have?

Up to 30 characters, which is the limit the Instagram app enforces. Instagram doesn’t publish that figure, though, so it could change. Our generator keeps every idea at 30 or fewer, and each card shows the exact count, so you can see the length before you copy it.

Can I use periods or underscores?

Yes. Instagram allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Still, it’s widely reported that a username can’t start or end with a period, or use two in a row. The generator follows those rules, so every result it shows should save without an error.

Does the generator check if a name is available?

No. The tool can’t see Instagram’s records, so it doesn’t know which names are taken. Copy the ideas you like, then try them in the Instagram app under Edit profile. The app tells you straight away whether a name can be used.

Should my Instagram and TikTok usernames match?

Ideally, yes. A matching handle makes you easier to find and tag, and it looks more consistent. But TikTok caps usernames at 24 characters, so keep your name at 24 or fewer if you want it to work on both apps.
