Instagram Shadowban: How to Check and What Actually Helps

An Instagram shadowban is what people call it when their posts suddenly stop reaching new people. Instagram doesn’t use that word. Usually, the cause is either content that isn’t eligible to be recommended to non-followers, or a normal dip in reach. The good news is that you can check which one it is in Account Status.

So check first, before you delete posts or change everything. Then fix only what needs fixing.

What is an Instagram shadowban?

An Instagram shadow ban, or “shadowban”, usually means your posts still reach followers but stop showing up for people who don’t follow you, in places like Explore, Reels and Feed recommendations.

Instagram frames it as recommendation eligibility. Its Recommendations Guidelines decide which content from public accounts can be recommended to non-followers. Even if yours isn’t eligible, it can still show up for your followers. So it’s a limit on recommendations, not a hidden ban.

Instagram has also said people use “shadowbanning” for many experiences, including posts that simply get fewer likes. After all, most people look at less than half of their Feed.

Am I shadowbanned on Instagram? How to check

The most reliable check is Account Status, because it’s Instagram’s own record. Insights and a hashtag test add context.

Check Account Status in the app

On iPhone, tap your profile picture in the bottom right, then tap the menu in the top right. Below “More info and support”, tap Account Status.

On a professional account (creator or business), Account Status shows whether your content may be eligible to be recommended. It can also flag your profile photo or bio, show a sample of posts that go against the Recommendations Guidelines, and list content removed under the Community Standards.

Keep in mind that being eligible doesn’t mean Instagram will recommend every post. It only means you can be recommended.

Look at where your engagement comes from in Insights

Next, open Insights. For posts, stories and Live, Instagram splits “Accounts engaged” into followers and non-followers. If non-follower engagement is near zero across several posts, compare that with Account Status.

Test a hashtag from a second account

Finally, search one of your hashtags from an account that doesn’t follow you. It’s a rough check, though, because hashtag results depend on timing and engagement.

Shadowban or just a reach dip?

Most of the time, a sudden drop is an ordinary reach dip.

  • Signs of a recommendation limit: Account Status flags your profile or shows a sample of posts, content was removed, or non-follower engagement stays near zero over several posts.
  • Signs of a normal dip: Account Status looks clear, you posted less often or at a different time, your hooks got weaker, or your audience’s interests shifted.

So a limit shows up in Account Status, while a normal dip usually does not.

What causes an Instagram shadowban?

The causes Instagram names fall into three groups: content, hashtags and behaviour.

Posts that break recommendation guidelines

Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines set a higher bar than its Community Standards. For example, they cover sexually suggestive content, content that promotes regulated products such as vaping, and unoriginal posts repurposed from another source with only minor edits. For Reels, Instagram has also said it avoids recommending ones that are low-resolution, watermarked or mostly text.

Broken or banned hashtags

Some hashtags aren’t searchable, because content posted with them keeps breaking Instagram’s rules, so they won’t help anyone find you. Also, Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post, so choose specific ones.

Spammy behaviour and automation

Instagram’s Recommendations Guidelines also cover coordinated comment networks meant to drive engagement artificially. Mass follow and unfollow and apps that log in as you are risky too. That’s why we explain growth without a password as the better route.

How to get unshadowbanned on Instagram

To get unshadowbanned on Instagram, find the cause in Account Status, fix it, then keep posting normally.

  1. Check Account Status. Note anything flagged in your profile or posts.
  2. Remove, edit or appeal flagged posts. If you think a flag is wrong, you may be able to request a review from Account Status.
  3. Disconnect apps that hold your password, then change it.
  4. Clean up your hashtags. Drop any that aren’t searchable, and keep to a few relevant ones.
  5. Slow down mass actions, like bulk following, unfollowing and copy-paste comments.
  6. Keep posting normally. Share original posts at your usual pace and check Account Status again.

Then follow the six steps, and check Account Status again after each change.

How long does an Instagram shadowban last?

There’s no fixed timeline. It depends on the cause and whether you fixed it, so check Account Status after each change rather than counting days.

How to keep reach healthy after a shadowban

Once Account Status looks clear, use the habits that grow any account. Start with a strong first frame, so people stop scrolling. Then write captions that invite a reply, and post on a schedule you can keep.

Our guide to more Instagram likes covers these habits in detail.

Some creators also add a small likes boost to a strong new post for early social proof. However, it doesn’t remove a restriction or fix a flagged post.

FAQ

Does Instagram tell you if you’re shadowbanned?

Not in those words. Instead, Account Status tells professional accounts whether their content may be eligible to be recommended, and which profile details or posts are a problem. Instagram’s help describes this check for professional accounts, so a personal account may not see it. Either way, your followers can still see your posts.

Can buying followers get you shadowbanned?

Services that log in as you add risk, because they act on your account directly. At Muddlefox, we only ask for your username, never your password. We also pace delivery gradually rather than all at once, and packages are one-time orders. Even so, no one can promise that buying has no effect on an account.

Does deleting and reposting a post fix a shadowban?

Not by itself. If a post goes against a guideline, the same post still goes against it when you share it again. So edit or remove what Account Status flags instead. And if you think a flag is wrong, request a review rather than reposting.

Do business and creator accounts get shadowbanned more?

Instagram’s help pages don’t say they do. The Recommendations Guidelines apply to public accounts, whatever their type. The main difference is that professional accounts can see their recommendation eligibility in Account Status. That makes a professional account the easier one to check.

Will switching to a personal account remove a shadowban?

Instagram doesn’t say switching removes a limit. The guidelines apply to public accounts, so changing the account type doesn’t change whether flagged content breaks them. You would also lose the easiest way to check. So stay professional, fix the flagged content and keep checking Account Status.

Wrap-up

An Instagram shadowban is usually a recommendation limit or a normal dip, and Account Status tells you which. Fix what it flags, then keep posting good work. If you’d like early social proof on your next strong post, you can buy Instagram likes with just your username and Instant Start.
