Help Center: best quality up to 1080 px wide. Widths from 320 to 1080 stay as uploaded between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Under 320 wide is enlarged to 320. Over 1080 wide is sized down to 1080. Source: Instagram Help Center – Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram. Last checked 2026-10-31.

Publishing API docs still list 4:5–1.91:1; the consumer Help Center page now lists 1.91:1–3:4. Prefer Help Center for in-app uploads; re-check both before launch. API also lists minimum width 320, maximum width 1440, JPEG and 8 MB.

Check a width and height

Video is not measured.

Results are Pass, Crop risk or Too small, with a plain export fix. A correct size does not decide how a post is received.

Export the Instagram post size at 1080 pixels wide, inside the supported ratios. Instagram’s Help Center sets that width, last checked October 31, 2026. You can also open the other free tools.

The checker is always free, with no login and no limits. It reads width and height in your browser, so your file stays on your device.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a format tab: Post, Reels, Story or Profile pic.
  2. Tap Copy size on a planning row when you only need that pixel pair.
  3. Under Check a width and height, enter Width (px) and Height (px).
  4. On Reels, you can add Duration (seconds) and Frame rate (FPS). A still image is optional on every tab.
  5. Tap Check size and read the result: Pass, Crop risk or Too small, plus the export note.

Instagram post size

From 320 to 1080 wide, Instagram keeps the file when the ratio is 1.91:1 to 3:4. At 1080 wide, height then runs from 566 to 1440. Outside that ratio, Instagram crops. Under 320 wide it enlarges to 320, but over 1080 it scales down to 1080. Source: Instagram Help Center, image resolution of photos you share on Instagram, last checked October 31, 2026.

  • Landscape is 1080×566, at 1.91:1.
  • Square is 1080×1080, at 1:1.
  • Tall is 1080×1440, at 3:4.

So the Instagram photo size to export is 1080 wide, for example 1080×1440 when you want it tall. On the publishing API, images must be JPEG, 8 MB max, from 4:5 to 1.91:1. Width runs from 320 to 1440 pixels. Source: Meta Instagram Graph API, IG User Media image specifications, last checked October 31, 2026. However, use the Help Center in the app, because 3:4 can fail in the API.

Instagram Reels size and length

Upload a reel from 1.91:1 to 9:16. Also use at least 30 FPS and 720 pixels. Source: Instagram Help Center, reel size and aspect ratios on Instagram, last checked October 31, 2026.

A 9:16 plan is 1080×1920.

Instagram Reels length

Help states no maximum length. The API allows 3 seconds to 15 minutes, at 23 to 60 FPS, so 30 FPS fits. Width stops at 1920 pixels. Files are MOV or MP4, up to 300 MB. The ratio runs from 0.01:1 to 10:1, but it recommends 9:16. Source: Meta Instagram Graph API, IG User Media reel specifications, last checked October 31, 2026.

The Help cover is 420×654, or 1:1.55. You can’t edit it after upload. Same Help page, last checked October 31, 2026. The API cover recommends 9:16, then crops to the middle. On a feed share, it uses the middle 1:1 square. Same reel specifications, last checked October 31, 2026.

Instagram Story size

A background needs at least 720×1280, at 9:16 or 9:18. Source: Meta Instagram Platform, Sharing to Stories, last checked October 31, 2026.

A 9:16 plan is 1080×1920. The page does not require that pair, but video can be 1080p. For this share API only, video can also run up to 20 seconds. On iOS, that page also says under 50 MB. So that cap is not an in-app Story length.

Graph API story video is separate. It runs from 3 to 60 seconds, at most 100 MB. Source: IG User Media story video specifications, last checked October 31, 2026.

Instagram profile picture size

Instagram does not publish an official profile-picture pixel size. The page title is “Add a profile picture or change your current picture on Instagram”. Last checked October 31, 2026.

In practice, upload a square and center the face or logo, because the circle crop cuts the corners. A common plan is 1080×1080, and that number is not from Meta. Then try the Instagram bio generator for the line under your name.

Why Help Center and API numbers differ

The Help Center is for the app, but the API is for publishing tools. Because they update apart, a file can pass one and fail the other.

First, the app allows 3:4, and the API stops at 4:5. As a result, re-check 1080×1440 before a tool posts it.

Then keep 20 seconds on the share API, and 60 seconds on Graph publishing.

Size alone does not decide how a post does. After it goes live, use the engagement rate calculator and the Instagram caption generator.

FAQ

What size should Instagram posts be?

Use 1080 wide, from 1.91:1 to 3:4, so height runs from 566 to 1440. Source: Instagram Help Center, image resolution of photos you share on Instagram, last checked October 31, 2026.

What is the Instagram Reels size?

Use 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 30 FPS and 720 pixels. Source: Instagram Help Center, reel size and aspect ratios, last checked October 31, 2026.

What size are Instagram Stories?

Use at least 720×1280, at 9:16 or 9:18. Source: Sharing to Stories, last checked October 31, 2026. For the share API only, video can be 1080p and up to 20 seconds.

What is the Instagram profile picture size?

There is no official pixel size, so use a square and center it. Last checked October 31, 2026, the Help page still publishes none. A 1080×1080 file is a common plan, not a Meta size.

Does Instagram still use 4:5?

Yes, 4:5 still fits the Help range, but the API stops at 4:5. Last checked October 31, 2026. So a taller 3:4 file can fail in the API.

How long can a Reel be?

Instagram Reels length on the API is 3 seconds to 15 minutes. Source: IG User Media reel specifications, last checked October 31, 2026. Help states no maximum, so treat that span as an API limit.

Dimensions look good? When the post goes live, a small likes boost can help early engagement. Try free Instagram likes or followers with Instant Start on the free trial page.

Wrap-up

Check the post tab, then Reels, Story or profile, before you export. Follow Help Center numbers in the app, and API numbers when a tool publishes.

A likes boost is separate from the file size. After the post is up, see Instagram likes. For earnings, use the Instagram money calculator.
